Armenian Nutmeg Cake

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Grease [and line] a 20cmx30cm pan (at least 5cm deep)
  2. Sift flours and nutmeg into a large bowl.
  3. Rub in butter and mix in sugar (or process until crumbly).
  4. Press 1 1/2 cups of the mixture into prepared pan.
  5. Stir combined soda and milk into remaining dry ingredients with the egg and nuts.
  6. Mix well and pour into the pan on top of the first layer.
  7. Bake in a moderate oven about 35 minutes.
  8. Stand for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and cool.
  9. Cut into squares when cool.
